About the Area
Gavalochori is situated at an altitude of 100 meters in a rocky valley with olive and vine cultivation. It is a traditional village with beautiful stone houses. The name derives from the noble family of Gavaladon (who owned the village during the division of Crete into 12 new rulers of Byzantium in 1182).
Many of the well-known Gavalian walls are preserved in a fantastic landscape. There is also an excellent folklore museum in the village, where you can learn about the history and culture of the village. It is housed in a renovated Venetian building with stone arches. Additionally, there is an agricultural and tourist women’s cooperation in the central square, producing knitted embroideries and lace in a cottage.
